During my vacation in August I bought both the Google Home (129 USD) and the Amazon Echo Dot (49 USD) as I am interested in what they can do for Home Automation and for making my life easier. In the USA they both worked like a charm (with the exception of the internet connection from the hotel didn’t work, so I needed to workaround the problem by using the Personal Hotspot function on my iPad.
Now back in The Netherlands, an unsupported country for both, they do behave differently. This video demonstrates the differences. There is a clear winner, the Google Home as it works almost fully with the exception of understanding Dutch.
Hi, Amazon now produce an international version. I live in NL, but have just ordered the DE version without realising. Will the DE version allow a richer feature set in your opinion? Thanks for the vid. Very useful.
Cheers…Chris
Hi Chris,
Awesome! The physical product is the same. You need to configure the Echo via the Amazon.de website and change it to the Netherlands for example. I will try it out asap as currently it thinks I’m in Dusseldorf.
